Renato Nicolodi - Volume II

Eleven years after Renato Nicolodi’s first book, we designed “Volume II”, a substantial presentation of his recent work. At the heart of Nicolodi’s work lies the contrast between black and white, between darkness and light. It is therefore a natural choice that the successor to the pitch-black book of 2015 is a stark white volume.

As the artist puts it:
This book is white. It isn’t empty, or innocent.
White signals tension. It conceals, it opens.
It promises light, yet blinds sight.
The black book was a foundation, a door opening.
My work is not indifferent. It is a gesture.
A space that refuses to be filled.
A silence that offers resistance.
Contrasts shape my work.
Black and white. Left and right. Full and empty.
This book is no final chord. It is a breathing space.
An invitation to look slowly. To bear what is missing.
And to believe that what is missing can also be a beginning.

Interwoven throughout the publication, four essays—Black, White, Emptiness, and Square—by Pascal Gielen extend and deepen the work.
